Poinsettias, with their vibrant flowers, are a classic holiday favourite. Follow these care instructions to ensure your Poinsettia remains festive and healthy throughout the holiday season.
Light: Place your Poinsettia in bright, indirect light. It thrives in plenty of sunlight but should be protected from direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day. East or west-facing windows are ideal.
Watering: Water your Poinsettia when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogged roots. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
Temperature and Humidity: Maintain a temperature range of 60-70°F (15-21°C). Poinsettias prefer a moderately humid environment. If your home is dry, consider placing a tray of water near the plant or using a humidifier.
Potting Mix: Use a well-draining potting mix. Poinsettias are sensitive to overly wet conditions, so a mix formulated for indoor plants or a combination of potting soil and perlite is suitable.
Fertilizing: Poinsettias typically don't require much fertilization during their blooming period. If you want to keep the plant after the holidays, you can feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half the recommended strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
Pruning: Pruning is not usually necessary during the blooming season. If your Poinsettia is in good shape after the holidays and you want to keep it, you can prune it in late winter or early spring to encourage bushier growth.
Common Issues:
Pets: Poinsettias are mildly toxic to pets. Keep them out of reach of curious animals.
